Lady Hornets drop road district game to Cornersville

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs 49-40 on the road Tuesday for their ninth loss of the season.
The Lady Hornets led for a majority of the first three quarters, but a big scoring run by the Lady Bulldogs to start the final period put Huntland behind for good as the team took its first district loss of the year.
The teams traded baskets throughout the opening period as the Lady Hornets ended the quarter with a slight lead.
They led 10-8 after one quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs took their first lead of the day early in the second quarter on a 3-pointer to make it an 11-10 game, but a pair of 3-pointers from Logan McLennan put the Lady Hornets ahead for the rest of the half.
Huntland led 20-15 at halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take the lead once again. After a few ties in the period, the Lady Hornets pulled back ahead with about a minute remaining in the quarter on a basket by Yareli Avalos.
They led 28-27 going into the final period. McLennan scored six of Huntland’s eight points in the third quarter.
Following a basket by McLennan to start the fourth quarter, the Lady Bulldogs scored 10 straight points to completely flip the scoreboard in their favor.
The Lady Hornets weren’t able to make up any significant ground the rest of the way as they went on to lose by nine points.
McLennan led the Lady Hornets with 22 points for the game, followed by Jocy May with 12 points and Avalos with four.
Kinsley Kilpatrick scored two points.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 17-9 on the season and 4-1 in district play.
They will next play Friday at home against Moore County High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
