Tech Ready
Tech Ready classes are being offered at the Townsend Cultural Center, 913 S. Shepherd St., Winchester, through October. The classes will teach practical technology skills for work, daily life, education and online safety. Classes are free to attend, but registration is required by calling 931-386-6044 or emailing TechReady@franklincotn.gov. Subjects include workforce development on Mondays and Tuesdays from 3-5 p.m., public tech readiness Tuesdays through Thursdays from 5-7 p.m. and youth education on Tuesdays from 3-7 p.m.
Grace Center of Hope
Grace Center of Hope opens its doors every Tuesday and Thursday from 4-6 p.m. with free programs for elementary and middle school children. Kids will be provided with help with homework, group tutoring, games, a meal and an interactive Bible lesson. Grace Center of Hope is located at 912 S. College St., Winchester.
FC Senior Citizens Center
The Franklin County Senior Citizens Center, 74 Clover Drive, Winchester, is available to provide daily entertainment and activities. The activities on Mondays include exercise by DVD from 9-10 a.m.; ceramics from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; brain games at 10 a.m.; bingo at 10:30 a.m.; line dancing from 10:30-11:30 a.m.; and coloring/painting from 11 a.m. There is also mahjong at noon on the second and fourth Monday of each month. Tuesday activities include chair yoga from 9-10 a.m.; ceramics from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; brain games at 10 a.m. and bingo at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday activities include ladies rook in the library at 11 a.m. Thursday activities include chair yoga from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and line dancing from 11 a.m. to noon. Friday activities include bunco at 10 a.m. and dancing from 6-9 p.m. for $5 per patron. The center also contains the Uptown Thrift Store which is open from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. Donations of household items, clothing and accessories are needed at the thrift store.
Grief-support Sundays
Oaklawn Baptist Church, 108 Memorial Drive, Winchester, hosts a grief support group on Sundays at 4 p.m. Call Jennifer Mitchell at 678-763-5691 for more information.
June 25
Cowan Commercial Club
The Cowan Commercial and Community Club will meet today at 5:30 p.m. at The Artisan Depot, 204 E. Cumberland St. The club will discuss several community action items and discuss updates from area businesses. Membership is open to all.
July 3
Sobriety checkpoint
The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint on July 3 at 10 p.m. at the intersection of State Highway 50 and Owl Hollow Church. The scheduled checkpoint is contingent upon manpower and weather conditions.
July 5
FAC fireworks
First Apostolic Church of Winchester will be hosting its third annual fireworks show on July 5 at 216 Old Decherd Road, Winchester. The fireworks show will start at 5 p.m. and will also feature free bounce houses and food.
July 18-19
Christmas in July
The second annual Christmas in July craft, vendor and car swap meet will be held from July 18-19 at Monterey Station, 104 Monterey St., Cowan. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 18 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 19. July 21
Disabled American Veterans
The next meeting of the Disabled American Veterans, Fifth District, Chapter 71, will be on July 21 at 5 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1893 building, 6200 AEDC Road, Estill Springs. The meeting will start with a meal at a cost of $15 with the business portion of the meeting beginning at 5:45 p.m. All veterans are welcome.
July 24
Dennis Meeks golf tourney
The annual Dennis Meeks FCA Golf Tournament will be held on July 24 at the Franklin County Country Club, 912 Country Club Road, Winchester. Proceeds from the event will help provide for meals, speakers, summer camps and other support for students involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The event will include an 18-hole, three-person scramble at 8:30 a.m. and a two-person Par 3 memorial event at 2 p.m. The memorial event will raise money to fund a bridge on the third hole of the course in memory of longtime FCA supporters Jim Cunningham and Jerry Hall. Registration costs are $300 for the three-person scramble and $70 for the two-person memorial event. Sept. 5
Car, truck and motorcycle show
The Pack the Park Car Club’s 15th semi-annual fall car, truck and motorcycle show will be held on Sept. 5 at Franklin County High School, 833 Bypass Road, Winchester. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Sept. 26 as a backup date in case of rain. The show will feature vendors, a swap meet and food trucks. Oct. 10
Cruisin’ for the Vets
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1893 will be hosting its fifth annual Cruisin’ for the Vets Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show on Oct. 10 at Estill Springs City Park. All makes and models are welcome. Registration will be held from 9 a.m. to noon with a $20 fee per vehicle or bike. All proceeds will go toward veterans in need. Vehicles and bikes will be judged by registered operators. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 75 vehicles and 25 bikes to register. There will be 50 trophies, door prizes, a craft show, food and drinks on hand.
