Lady Hornets record trio of victories

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs 12-2 at home on April 16 for their sixth win of the season.

The Lady Hornets scored at least one run in four of the district game’s five innings as they secured their fourth straight victory overall and moved their record for the year back up to .500.

Huntland head softball coach Michael Tipps said that his team did a good job of adjusting to Cornersville’s pitchers as the game went on.

“This is a little bit of a different speed than what we’ve been seeing. We hit a couple balls into the ground in the first inning,” he said. “We kept adjusting, and then we finally started hitting some line drives. You’ve got to make an adjustment as the game goes on as to how the pitching is going to be thrown because it’s not going to be the same every game.”

The Lady Hornets scored three runs in the bottom of the first without recording a hit as Lily Jackson drew a bases-loaded walk, Emily Stewart scored off of an error on a ball hit by Analyn Riddle and Natalynn Bolin got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it a 3-0 game.

The teams scored one run each in the second inning with an RBI single from Kinah Mason in the bottom of the second putting the overall tally at 4-1.

The Lady Bulldogs scored a run off of a throwing error in the top of the third to cut Huntland’s lead down to 4-2.

However, the Lady Hornets then scored four runs in the bottom of the third as Millie Walker and Catara Johnson hit consecutive RBI singles and Stewart followed with a two-run double to push the deficit up to 8-2.

The Lady Hornets ended the game with a four-run fifth inning as Stewart hit an RBI single, Mason followed with a two-run single and Jackson contributed an RBI double to trigger the mercy rule and clinch a 10-run victory.

Mason pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with nine strikeouts, four hits, one walk and two runs allowed for the day.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 6-6 on the season and 4-1 in district play.

The Lady Hornets expanded the deficit to 14-0 in the bottom of the second as Walker drew a bases-loaded walk, Johnson hit an RBI single, Jakubowski scored off of an error on a ball hit by Stewart, and Mason hit a two-run single in the frame.

The Raiderettes got on the board in the top of the fourth as they scored two runs in the frame to cut the lead down to 14-2.
