Rebels split district series; fall at Cascade

The Franklin County Rebels lost to the Cascade Champions 10-1 on the road on April 16 for their 12th loss of the season.

The Rebels fell behind by a decent amount early with the Champions fully pulling away from them in the back half of the contest.

The Champions hit two solo home runs in the bottom of the first, and a balk gave them another run in the frame to make it a 3-0 game.

The Rebels loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the third as Layton Jones and Gus Gardner drew walks and Avery Jackson hit a single, but the Champions then induced a groundout to end the inning and strand all three runners.

The Rebels had another bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the fourth after Taylor Austin singled, Braden Jackson drew a walk and Gavin McBee got hit by a pitch, and Jones then drew another walk to bring in a run and cut the lead down to 3-1.

However, the Champions put together another threerun frame in the bottom of the fourth to put the Rebels in a 6-1 hole.

The Champions recorded another two home runs in the bottom of the sixth as part of a four-run frame to push the deficit up to 10-1 going into the final inning.

Ayden Hodosi drew a oneout walk to give the Rebels a baserunner in the top of the seventh, but the game would be called off moments later due to thunderstorms in the area as the Rebels lost by nine.

Keylen Partin pitched the first 3 2-3 innings for the Rebels with seven hits, four walks, three earned runs and three unearned runs allowed for the day.

Jackson Carr pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts, one hit and one walk allowed.

Avery Jackson recorded one out on the mound with three hits, one walk and four runs allowed, and Bryce Waldow recorded two outs in relief with one strikeout, one hit and no runs allowed.

With the loss, the Rebels moved to 15-12 on the season.

Lawrence County 5, Rebels 4

The Rebels lost to the Lawrence County Wildcats 5-4 at home on April 14 for their 11th loss of the season.

The Rebels trailed for most of the contest with an attempted rally in the bottom of the seventh coming up one run short as they split their district series with Lawrence County.

The Wildcats jumped ahead in the top of the first as they scored a pair of runs in the frame to put the Rebels in a quick 2-0 hole.

The Rebels got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first as Hodosi came through with a two-out RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.

The Rebels loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the second as Connor Parker got hit by a pitch, Braden Jackson drew a walk and Ethan Stoltzfus laid down a bunt single, but three consecutive flyouts then ended the frame and stranded all three runners.

The Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the third to expand their advantage, but the Rebels answered back quickly as a two-run home run from Parker in the bottom of the third cut the deficit back down to 4-3.

The Wildcats loaded the bases in the top of the fourth on two singles and a walk with a wild pitch then allowing the lead runner to score to put the overall tally at 5-3.

Jones led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to cut Lawrence County’s lead in half, and Gardner followed with a single to reach base as the potential tying run.

Hodosi recorded a oneout single later in the frame, but Kingzli Wells, pinch-running for Gardner, was tagged out while trying to advance to third on the play, and a strikeout then ended the contest as the Rebels lost by one.

Gardner pitched the first 3 1-3 innings for the Rebels with three strikeouts, 11 hits, one walk and five runs allowed for the day.

Parker pitched 3 2-3 scoreless innings in relief with one strikeout and no hits allowed.

With the loss, the Rebels moved to 15-11 on the season and 4-2 in district play.

Rebels 8, Lawrence County 7

The Rebels beat the Lawrence County Wildcats 8-7 on the road on April 13 for their 15th win of the season.

The Rebels took an early lead in the contest, expanded their advantage late and held off a seventh-inning rally from the Wildcats to clinch a district victory.

The Rebels jumped ahead in the top of the second as Colson Kelley and McBee drew one-out walks before Jones hit a home run to left field to give his team a 3-0 lead.

The score remained steady until the top of the fifth as an RBI double from Hodosi and an RBI single from Austin boosted Franklin County’s lead up to 5-0.

The Rebels loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the sixth as McBee singled, Jones got hit by a pitch and Gardner drew a walk, and a one-out, two-run single from Hodosi allowed the two lead runners to score with an error on the same play giving Franklin County a third run in the frame to push the deficit up to 8-0 late.

After being held hitless through the first six innings, the Wildcats recorded seven hits and seven runs in the bottom of the seventh, and they moved the potential tying run into scoring position at second base with two outs in the frame.

However, pitcher Cameron Denton then induced a groundout to end the contest and clinch a one-run win.

Kelley pitched 4 2-3 hitless, shutout innings for the Rebels with three strikeouts and six walks allowed for the day.

Avery Jackson then pitched 1 1-3 innings in relief with one strikeout, one hit, two walks and three runs allowed.

Denton pitched one inning in relief with one strikeout, six hits and four runs allowed.

With the win, the Rebels improved to 15-10 on the season and 4-1 in district play.

They next played Monday at Tullahoma High School in a game which came after the Herald Chronicle’s press deadline.
