Lady Hornets outpace Cornersville for road win

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs 11-3 on the road on April 30 for their ninth win of the season.

The Lady Hornets led for the entire district contest and fully pulled away in the middle innings as they recorded their seventh victory in eight games.

The Lady Hornets were the first team on the board as an RBI groundout from Kinah Mason gave them a 1-0 edge in the top of the first.

Peyton Counts and Natalynn Bolin both drew walks to lead off the top of the second, and a tworun single from Emmalyn Ennies then drove them both in to make it a 3-0 game early.

Millie Walker recorded an RBI fielder’s choice in the top of the fourth to boost the deficit up to 4-0 at the game’s midway point.

The Lady Hornets struck for three more runs in the top of the fifth as Lily Jackson hit an RBI single; Aliza Hill, pinch-running for Mason, scored off of a dropped third strike; and Jackson stole home as part of a triplesteal play with Analyn Riddle and Counts to give their team a 7-0 advantage.

The Lady Bulldogs capitalized on a few Huntland errors in the bottom of the fifth to score three runs in the frame and make up some ground.

However, the Lady Hornets answered back with a four-run sixth inning as Mason recorded a two-run single, Emily Stewart scored off of a dropped third strike and Counts hit into a sacrifi ce fly to put the overall tally at 11-3.

The Lady Hornets held Cornersville off the board for the final two innings of the contest as they won by eight.

Mason pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with 12 strikeouts, two hits, two walks and three unearned runs allowed for the day.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 9-7 on the season and 6-2 in district play.

They next played Monday against Moore County High School at Cornersville in a firstround game for the District 9A tournament which came after the Herald Chronicle’s press deadline.
