Hornets rout Cornersville in district debut

The Huntland High School Hornets beat the Cornersville Bulldogs 70-46 at home Friday for their 10th win of the season.

The Hornets opened up a big lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they cruised to a victory to start their district schedule for the year.

The Hornets started the opening period with a 17-4 run to quickly put themselves ahead by double digits.

They led 22-6 after one quarter.

The Hornets brought the deficit as high as 25 points in the second quarter before the Bulldogs ended the half on a 10-2 run to make up some ground.

Huntland led 39-22 at halftime.

The Hornets remained in firm control throughout the third quarter as they went into the final period with a 57-38 lead. Zeier Golden scored 10 of Huntland’s 18 points in the third quarter.

Both teams began to rotate their starters out of the game as the fourth quarter continued with Huntland’s backups maintaining the lead and finishing off the 24-point victory.

Golden led the Hornets with 19 points for the game, followed by Braylen Phillips with 18 points and Lashawn Kimmons with 12.

Eli Wiggs scored eight points, Kannon Lafevers scored seven, Trace Kilpatrick scored four and Noah McLennan scored two.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 10-7 on the season and 1-0 in district play.

They will next play Saturday at home against Grundy County High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
