PEGGY GOODMAN
GOODMAN, Peggy R., was first and foremost, a fine Christian lady. She was a lifelong member of Owl Hollow Church of Christ in Broadview and a shining example of “treat others as you wish to be treated.” Peggy was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, co-worker and neighbor. She wore every hat there is…was everything that anyone needed her to be… and was loved and adored by all who knew her. She was everyone’s biggest fan, most steadfast confidant and a never-ending source of strength. “Sunday Afternoons & Sweet Tea”—Family was what mattered most. She hosted Sunday dinner every week in her home. She loved to feed people…one of the many ways that she ministered to her family. Whether the day was spent watching football with a room full of boys gathered on the patio for sweet tea and a chat, throwing corn hole in the driveway, games with the grandkids, riding on back of a four-wheeler, she was right in the middle of it. Sunday evenings were spent playing a very competitive game of Rook with her favorite music playing in the background. She loved everything from Elvis to Merle Haggard, the Gaithers to The Happy Goodmans (no relation) and was very fond of the Eagles! Her favorite music and songs were those written by members of her family gathered around her dining room table. At “99” years young, she played her last game of Rook on Christmas Day and never missed a beat! “Mama Peggy” or “Mom Peg” for sure loved chocolate, ice cream and flowers! Rarely did anyone come through her door without bearing a gift of some sort just to show their love and appreciation for all that she did for everyone. She wasn’t vain, but proud and particular. “Mama Peggy” loved shopping and beautiful clothes. She never left the house without her lipstick and the perfect outfit. She had a standing Friday afternoon appointment to “get her hair done” every week. Then there was a trip to the grocery store to prepare for her Sunday crowd! Peggy loved to travel. Through the years, she visited many destinations in the states and abroad. She enjoyed browsing through photos and sharing memories of the people she met or those she traveled with. She literally never met a stranger. One of the most memorable things about her was a head full of dark, beautiful hair. No one could believe that she never dyed or colored it. (Well, once when she was 13 and she said “it turned it kind of blue”). She had started getting a little gray around the edges in the last few years. She just never seemed to age in body, mind or spirit. For her, “99” was just the number of years that she was a tremendous blessing to all who knew her, the best of everyone, her family’s greatest treasure. Her sparkling, blue-green eyes were the windows to her warm and beautiful soul. She leaves a legacy of faith, family, music and love. In the last year, Peggy had begun experiencing a few health problems and she passed with heart complications. She will be remembered, loved and cherished always by her family and friends. She was born to Ellis Riley and Cora Lee Steakley Riley (both deceased). She was preceded in death by her natural brothers, G.W. Riley “Red”; step-dad, John Jennings; step-brothers, John Jennings, Jr. and Bobby Lee Jennings; step-sister, Pauline Jennings Pickett; husband, Joe C. Goodman of Winchester, and son, Randall Brent Goodman of Winchester. She is survived by her son, Ellis L. Goodman of Decherd; six natural grandchildren and 12 natural great-grandchildren: Troy E. Goodman (Paula) of Winchester and their three children, Amy Goodman, Leslie Goodman Low (Keith) and Cory B. Goodman (Elisabeth); Traci D. Goodman of Winchester and her two children, Harley Goodman Burt (Emilia) and Dillan R. Clark; Tony Brent Goodman (Shirley) of Decherd and his son, Thomas Brent Goodman; Joey Brent Goodman (Crystal) of Winchester and his five children, Jesse Brent Goodman (Haley), Chasely Brent Goodman (Heather), Chelsea Goodman, Tayden Goodman and Riley Jo Goodman; Jaysa Goodman Hill (James) of Tullahoma and Jennifer Goodman Ally (Paul) of Estill Springs and their don, Jon Ethan Ally. Peggy has several step-great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren as well as many surviving step-nieces and nephews and step-great-nieces and nephews. Visitation was held on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, from 5-8 p.m. at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Services were conducted on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023, at 3:30 p.m. in the Moore-Cortner chapel. Interment followed at Franklin Memorial Gardens. Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, 300 First Ave NW, Winchester, TN 37398, 931-967-2222, www.moorecortner.com.

GLORIA LOYD
LOYD, Gloria Blanco, a devout Christian, died peacefully in Cincinnati with her family on Jan. 2, 2023, at the age of 88. She was a resident of Bogota, South America when she came to Winchester, Tennessee in 1965. She was the loving mother of Edgar E. (and Melissa Neffa) Loyd of Cincinnati, step-grandmother of Catherine A. Loyd of Boston, Massachusetts and loving sister of Margarita Blanco Garzon of Ibagué Colombia, South America. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews across the U.S., Colombia, Spain and the Netherlands. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 41-years, Larry Jacob Loyd in 2012, and by her brothers Tito Ernesto, Francisco, Enrique, and Elíecer Blanco. She was born at Ubaté, Colombia, on May 10, 1934, to Ernesto and Isabel Garcia Blanco. She became one of the first women from her town to be awarded a scholarship to the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional in Bogotá, Colombia, where she graduated in 1954 and began a teaching career that spanned into six decades. She taught four years English as a second language, alongside French, Spanish and Latin at the Colegio Mayor in Bogotá. During these years she also spent part of her summers teaching in remote and impoverished sections of Colombia in Quibdó and Yopal under the auspices of Camillo Torres, a Roman Catholic priest who later was assassinated. She first came to the United States in 1965 under a two-year grant as an exchange teacher with the Cordell Hull Foundation for International Education, teaching Spanish at Franklin County High School in Winchester, Tennessee. The second year she taught Spanish at the high school in the mornings and third through grade six at Clark Memorial School in the afternoons.
Here, she became lifelong best friends with her roommate, Crocia Roberson, 4-H Club Agent, who had just arrived here and she became like an extended family member.
Her time as a teacher in Winchester was featured as the cover story of Tennessee Teacher magazine in May 1967.
Returning to Colombia, she taught in the private schools of Ecopetrol (the national petroleum company) in Barrancabermeja, Colombia. There she met an American engineer from Ohio who became the love of her life, Larry J. Loyd. They were married at Panama City, Panama on June 22, 1971, and moved to Lubbock, Texas. Gloria then received a teaching assistantship at Ohio University where she completed her masters in Spanish literature in 1973. Continuing to teach Spanish, French and Latin, her first years of teaching were in Washington Court House Ohio.
When the family relocated to Cincinnati in 1977, she began teaching within Cincinnati schools. One of her keen delights was keeping in touch and seeing the success of her former students.
Wanting to share the blessings of the educational opportunities she had received, she also helped sponsor five of her nieces and nephews to live in the U.S. while pursuing their education, as well as supporting the tuition of several more and her Colombian family. During the late 1970s, the family also lived abroad twice in Mexico City, where Larry was an international project manager for P&G and they spent many weekends visiting archeological sites. She retired in 2002 to enjoying traveling to visit family and friends, gardening and serving her church community. Raised as a Catholic, she later became a member of College Hill Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati, and proudly became an American citizen in 1980.
The family received friends on Jan. 14, 2023, at 11 a.m. at College Hill Presbyterian Church at 5742 Hamilton Avenue, with a celebration of her life following at noon. Burial was at Spring Grove Cemetery, as well as at Bogotá, Colombia where a portion of her ashes will return to her homeland later this spring.
