Hornets drop home contest to Cannon County

The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Cannon County Lions 56-45 at home Saturday for their ninth loss of the season.

The Hornets fell behind in the first quarter and saw the deficit grow to double-digits after halftime to seal their defeat.

The Hornets took an early lead in the contest, but the Lions ended the first quarter on a 14-4 run to jump ahead.

Huntland trailed 19-12 after one quarter.

A 12-5 run by the Lions to start the second quarter brought the deficit up to double digits early before the Hornets scored six straight to make up some ground.

Huntland trailed 31-23 at halftime. Braylen Phillips scored 15 points for Huntland in the first half.

The Hornets trimmed the deficit down to four points early in the third quarter, but the Lions put together another 14-4 run to pull away. Eli Wiggs scored six of Huntland’s nine points in the third quarter.

Huntland trailed 46-32 going into the final period.

The lead peaked at 20 points in the fourth quarter with the Hornets scoring nine straight points at the end of the game to put the final deficit at 11.

Phillips led the Hornets with 22 points for the game, followed by Wiggs with 10 points and Lashawn Kimmons with seven.

Kannon Lafevers scored four points and Trace Kilpatrick scored two.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 11-9 on the season.

They will next play Tuesday at Fayetteville City High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
