Rebels hold off Warren County for close district win

The Franklin County Rebels beat the Warren County Pioneers 51-48 on the road Friday for their ninth win of the season.
The teams matched each other in points for each of the first three quarters with the Rebels pulling ahead and holding off the Pioneers late in the final period for a district victory.
The first quarter set the tone for the rest of the contest with the teams trading points back and forth early.
The score was tied at 13-13 after one quarter.
The Rebels opened the second quarter with a 12-5 run to create some separation, but the Pioneers responded by scoring seven straight points to tie the score at 25-25 going into the halftime break.
The teams remained deadlocked throughout the third quarter with neither being able to pull away as the score was tied at 33-33 going into the fourth quarter.
The Rebels went on a 15-8 run to start the fourth quarter which was capped off by a 3-point play from Ke’Andre Johnson to give them a 48-41 lead with about three minutes remaining.
The Pioneers cut the lead back down to two points in the final minute before a free throw from Sam Vincent put Franklin County’s advantage at three points with about 17 seconds left.
A potential tying shot by the Pioneers on their next possession fell short with Kaleb Rigsby grabbing the rebound in the closing seconds to secure the win by three.
Johnson led the Rebels with 15 points for the game, followed by Vincent with nine points and Kai Baker with seven.
Rigsby and Ethan Stephens scored six points each, and Kenyon Fuqua and Jacob Sanchez scored four points each.
With the win, the Rebels improved to 9-13 on the season and 2-2 in district play.
They will next play Tuesday at Coffee County Central High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
