Five members of the St. Andrew’s-Sewanee boys wrestling team competed in the Division II East regional individual tournament Saturday at Baylor School.

The top six finishers in each weight class earned berths to the Division II state tournament with none of the Sewanee wrestlers reaching that qualifying mark.

Jonte Wedig had the longest run of the day for the Mountain Lions as he went 2-2 in the 170-pound division.

Wedig opened the bracket with a pinfall victory in 1:18 over Nathan Redford of the Webb School of Knoxville. However, a pinfall loss to Grace Christian Academy’s Logan Mavroff in 1:12 then sent Wedig down to the consolation bracket.

Wedig pinned Silverdale Baptist Academy’s Jacob Eldridge in 1:34 to stay alive in the bracket, but Chattanooga Christian’s Kyle Sheridan eliminated him in the third round of the consolation bracket with a pin in 1:49.

Jack Hale lost his opening match in the 182-pound bracket as Montgomery Bell Academy’s Johnothon Moore pinned him in 48 seconds.

Hale rebounded with a pinfall victory over Notre Dame’s Mason Sims in 2:46 to start the consolation bracket before falling to Silverdale Baptist’s Braden Wilson via pin in 4:22.

Thomas Billups had a brief run in the 195-pound bracket as an injury forced him to forfeit his opening-round match to Baylor’s Dylan Crawford, and he wouldn’t be able to return to action for the rest of the day.

Tom Karanja nearly went the distance with Notre Dame’s Hulices Gomez in the first round of the 152-pound bracket before taking a pinfall loss in 5:07.

After receiving a bye to start the consolation bracket, Karanja wrestled a full three rounds with Silverdale Baptist’s Micah Swope before losing in a 12-1 major decision.

Eoin Pate rounded out the action for the Mountain Lions as he took consecutive pinfall losses in the 106-pound bracket to Baylor’s William Phillips and Knoxville Catholic’s Edwin Cardenas in 58 seconds and 42 seconds, respectively.

The St. Andrew’s-Sewanee girls wrestling team will compete in the Region 2 individual tournament Friday at Franklin County High School. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
