Lady Hornets rout Fayetteville to advance to district finals

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Fayetteville Lady Tigers 63-46 at Cornersville High Tuesday in a semifinal game for the District 9A tournament.
The Lady Hornets pulled ahead by double digits late in the first quarter and remained comfortably in front for the rest of the day as they advanced to the district championship game for the fourth year in a row.
There were six lead changes in the opening period before the Lady Hornets ended the quarter with 12 straight points to create some separation. Logan McLennan scored 12 of Huntland’s 23 points in the first quarter.
They led 23-13 after one quarter.
The Lady Hornets maintained a steady lead throughout the second quarter as they added a few more points to their advantage.
They led 32-21 at halftime.
The Lady Hornets ended the third quarter on a 9-2 run as they continued to outpace the Lady Tigers on the scoreboard.
They led 49-31 going into the final period.
A 10-2 run by the Lady Hornets to open the fourth quarter effectively put the game out of reach with the Lady Tigers making up some ground late before the final deficit settled at 17 points.
McLennan led the Lady Hornets with 27 points for the game, followed by Jocy May with 11 points and Ashtyn Danley with eight.
Morgan Sanders and Yareli Avalos scored six points each, Aysia Williams scored three and Kinsley Kilpatrick scored two.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 20-11 on the season.
They will next play Thursday against Moore County High School at Cornersville in the District 9A championship game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
