Lady Hornets rout Culleoka to open regional tourney

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Culleoka Lady Warriors 60-24 at home Friday in a quarterfinal game for the Region 5A tournament.
The Lady Hornets created most of their lead in the first half and cruised from there as the blowout victory advanced them to the next round of the bracket.
The Lady Hornets scored the first 11 points of the contest and allowed just one point total in the opening period.
They led 13-1 after one quarter.
The Lady Hornets grew the lead to more than 20 points in the second quarter as they ended the half with another run of 11 straight points.
They led 35-7 at halftime.
The Lady Hornets remained in firm control throughout the third quarter as they pushed their advantage up to more than 30 points.
They led 52-16 going into the final period.
The Lady Hornets rotated their starters out of the game for the entire fourth quarter as their backups maintained the lead and easily finished off the 36-point victory.
Yareli Avalos led the Lady Hornets with 16 points for the game, followed by Logan McLennan with 11 points and Jocy May and Ashtyn Danley with nine points each.
Kinsley Kilpatrick scored seven points, Riley Maxwell scored four, and Morgan Sanders and Kinah Mason scored two points each.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 22-11 on the season.
They will next play Monday against Eagleville High School at Cornersville in a semifinal game for the Region 5A tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
