Lady Hornets outpace Eagleville to advance to regional finals

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Eagleville Lady Eagles 57-50 at Cornersville Monday in a semifinal game for the Region 5A tournament.

After a close first half, the Lady Hornets pulled away in the third quarter and held on to a steady lead the rest of the way to advance to the regional championship game.

The teams traded the lead a few times in the opening period with the Lady Eagles ending up with a slight advantage when the quarter ended.

Huntland trailed 12-10 after one quarter.

The Lady Hornets started the second quarter with a 10-3 run to take their largest lead of the first half at five points, but the Lady Eagles then scored six straight to pull back ahead by a score of 21-20 midway through the period.

The Lady Hornets responded by scoring five points in a row to retake the lead once more late in the second quarter as they carried a narrow 25-24 advantage into the halftime break.

The Lady Hornets were able to stay in front throughout the third quarter as they slowly built up their lead over the course of the period.

Huntland led 42-34 going into the final period.

The Lady Hornets pushed their lead up to double digits multiple times throughout the fourth quarter and kept their advantage at six points or higher for the rest of the day as they went on to win by seven. Jocy May scored 10 of Huntland’s 15 points in the fourth quarter.

May led the Lady Hornets with 23 points for the game, followed by Ashtyn Danley with 14 points and Logan McLennan and Yareli Avalos with seven points each.

Aysia Williams scored six points.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 23-11 on the season.

They will next play Wednesday against Wayne County High School at Cornersville in the Region 5A championship game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
