The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Fayetteville Tigers 74-49 at Cornersville Tuesday in a semifinal game for the Region 5A tournament.

The Hornets held a lead at least once in each of the first three quarters, but the Tigers pulled away in the final period to bring an end to Huntland’s season.

The teams traded the lead a few times early in the opening period before the Tigers established a small early advantage.

The Hornets trailed 14-12 after one quarter.

The Hornets briefly grabbed a 20-19 lead with about four minutes remaining in the first half on a shot by Zeier Golden, but the Tigers then scored seven straight to pull back ahead. Braylen Phillips scored eight of Huntland’s 13 points in the second quarter.

Huntland trailed 28-25 at halftime.

The Hornets trailed by as many as seven points early in the third quarter before scoring 10 straight points to take a 39-36 lead.

However, this advantage would once again be short-lived as the Tigers scored the last six points of the third quarter to put Huntland behind by a score of 42-39 going into the final period. Lashawn Kimmons scored eight of Huntland’s 14 points in the third quarter.

The Tigers started the fourth quarter with a 15-6 run to bring the deficit up to double digits for the first time, and they closed out the contest with 13 straight points to fully pull away as the Hornets lost by 25.

Kimmons led the Hornets with 16 points for the game, followed by Phillips with 15 points and Golden with eight.

Eli Wiggs and Trace Kilpatrick scored five points each.

With the loss, the Hornets finished their season with a record of 16-15.
