Rebelettes drop district contest versus Warren County

The Franklin County Rebelettes lost to the Warren County Lady Pioneers 11-4 at home Thursday for their 16th loss of the season.

The Lady Pioneers scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings and maintained a steady lead the rest of the way as a late offensive surge from the Rebelettes wasn’t enough to get them back into the game.

Franklin County head softball coach Kelly Kennedy said that a slow start to the game was the biggest issue for her team in the district contest.

“I think we just wait too long to get started. You’ve got to come out ready to hit,” she said. “I thought our best hitting came late in the game, and by that point, we were a little too far behind to come back.”

The Lady Pioneers put up three runs in each of the first two innings to quickly put the Rebelettes in a 6-0 hole.

Kaitlyn Montgomery led off the bottom of the second with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored from there on a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Sherrill to get the Rebelettes on the board.

However, the Lady Pioneers scored another two runs in the top of the third to grow the early deficit to 8-1.

The Lady Pioneers added another run in the top of the fifth and grew their lead to double digits with two runs in the top of the sixth to make it an 11-1 game.

Jocilyn DeSmet came through with a two-out RBI double in the bottom half of the sixth to extend the game as the Rebelettes were able to avoid the mercy rule.

The Rebelettes pulled a little closer in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double by Kaitlyn Montgomery, but they weren’t able to make up any more ground as they lost by seven.

With the loss, the Rebelettes moved to 2-16 on the season and 0-4 in district play.

They will next play Friday at home against Cascade High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
