The Franklin County Rebelettes lost to the Coffee County Lady Raiders 21-0 at home Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Lady Raiders capitalized on defensive miscues by the Rebelettes to jump out to a big lead and never looked back as the Rebelettes started the day with a decisive loss.
The Lady Raiders sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the first and scored eight runs with the assistance of a few Franklin County errors to put the Rebelettes in a deep hole early.
The Rebelettes got their lone hit of the contest in the bottom of the first as Natalie Hagood hit a single in the frame to move a recently walked Jocilyn DeSmet into scoring position with one out. However, she wouldn’t advance past second base before the end of the frame.
The Lady Raiders put together another eight-run inning in the top of the second to make it a 16-0 game, and they added another five runs in the top of the third to push the deficit up to more than 20.
The Rebelettes were retired in order in the bottom of the third to bring an early end to the game via the mercy rule.
With the loss, the Rebelettes moved to 4-21 on the season and 0-8 in district play.
Coffee County 14, Rebelettes 2
The Rebelettes lost to the Coffee County Lady Raiders 14-2 at home Tuesday in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Rebelettes kept the score much closer through the first four innings compared to the first game of the day, but the Lady Raiders pulled away in the final inning to seal a sweep of the evening’s contests.
With runners at the corners in the top of the first, the Lady Raiders attempted a delayed double steal, but the Rebelettes turned it into a double play as they tagged out the lead runner at home plate and caught the trailing runner trying to advance to third.
However, the Lady Raiders scored six runs in the top of the second to take control of the game once again and put the Rebelettes in a decent hole.
Paislie Edge led off the bottom of the third with a single, stole second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Emma Owens before coming around to score on an RBI single by Jocilyn DeSmet for Franklin County’s first run of the day.
The Lady Raiders pulled ahead by double digits in the top of the fifth as they scored eight runs in the frame to put the Rebelettes behind by 13 runs late.
The Rebelettes got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth on another RBI single by Jocilyn DeSmet, but that would be it for their offense as they lost by 12.
With the loss, the Rebelettes moved to 4-22 on the season and 0-9 in district play.
Franklin County head softball coach Kelly Kennedy said her team will have a lot to work on before a postseason rematch with Coffee County on Thursday.
“We certainly didn’t play our best ball. I think that showed in both games tonight,” she said before referring to where her team’s focus will be in their next practice. “We need to talk about our mentality at the plate. We also need to talk about desire, wanting the ball to come to you out on the field, being able to make those plays when they do come to you and picking your teammates up when they make errors.”
The Rebelettes will next play Thursday at Coffee County Central High School in a first-round game for the District 6-4A tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
