Estill commemorates its 75-year history with anniversary event
Estill Springs has traditionally been a quaint, peaceful little town on Saturdays, but the 75-year-old community came to life this past weekend with a celebration honoring its diamond anniversary.
Saturday was filled with fun activities honoring and celebrating Estill Springs’ 75 official years as a community.
Opening remarks were made from 10 a.m. to noon at the town’s Community Center about what a significant milestone it is to reach 75 years of existence.
The day’s activities featured a parade that began during the noon hour that was filled with decorative floats, routed down Main Street and ending up at Estill Springs City Park.
Mayor David Kelley opened a time capsule at 2 p.m. from a previous Estill Springs milestone, and he spoke about how significant it is to preserve the community’s heritage. Estill Springs’ city leaders also planted another time capsule that includes items from the current period to be opened at another celebration of the town’s existence.
The celebration included live music from the bluegrass/gospel group Final Crossing Band and classic rock from the Wild Buck Band.
Craft and food vendors also were able to take advantage of a great opportunity to promote and sell their products.
Multiple sections of the park were dedicated to youth activities, including inflatable objects, games, contests and other offerings.
WZYX Radio conducted a hula hoop contest for children in the afternoon where winners walked away with free tickets to the Chattanooga Zoo and the Beech Bend amusement park in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
As the evening cooled off and the sun set, the conclusion of the day’s activities was marked with a free firework show for guests to enjoy.
