Trojans fall to Moore County in close home matchup

The South Middle School Trojans lost to the Moore County Raiders 24-20 at home Tuesday for their fourth loss of the season.

The score was kept close throughout with the Trojans taking a narrow loss to close out their regular season with a record just below .500.

The Trojans scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half with Brennan Taylor and Jacoba Fells catching one scoring pass each from quarterback Bentley Baldwin. Jonah Holt added a two-point conversion after the Fells touchdown.

The Raiders also scored two touchdowns in the first half and were successful on both of their two-point conversion attempts to provide the early difference in the game.

The Trojans trailed 16-14 at halftime.

The second half saw each team record one touchdown with Baldwin and Taylor connecting on another passing score for South.

The Raiders were once again successful on their lone two-point conversion attempt of the half while an unsuccessful try for the Trojans after their touchdown caused the overall deficit to increase.

The Trojans weren’t able to find a go-ahead score late as they lost by four.

Baldwin ended the game with 229 passing yards on 13 completions, and he intercepted a pass on the defensive end.

Taylor caught four passes for 116 yards and carried the ball once for two yards.

Fells had 79 receiving yards on five receptions and intercepted a pass on defense.

Kaveon Sutton carried the ball five times for 41 yards and caught three passes for 21 yards.

Holt had 21 rushing yards on five carries and intercepted a pass on defense.

Jack Price caught one pass for 13 yards, and Odeviyon Poe carried the ball twice for 13 yards.

With the loss, the Trojans moved to 3-4 on the season.

They will next play on Sept. 26 against North Middle School at the old high school football field. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
