South, WCA runners compete in sectional meet

The cross country teams of South Middle School and Winchester Christian Academy competed in the Section 3A meet Saturday at Buckner Park.

The top eight teams and the next 10 best times outside of those qualifying teams received berths to the Class A state championship meet with none of the local runners meeting that standard.

WCA’s Levi Karl had the best overall placement among the Franklin County competitors as he finished 54th out of 181 runners in the boys race with a time of 14:16.45. Bellevue’s Elliott Shapland took the final boys qualifying spot for the day in 22nd place with a mark of 13:13.2.

The other individual qualifiers in the boys race and their times and placements for the day included H.G. Hill’s Ethan Garrett, first, 12:00.76; Loretto’s Billy Helton, second, 12:07.38; Forrest’s Benjamin Willis, seventh, 12:30.34; Meigs Magnet’s Luca Hood, ninth, 12:44.22; Spring Hill’s Jayden Bowe, 11th, 12:53.62; Forrest’s Luis Mackerela, 13th, 12:54.87; Bridgeforth’s Owen Jarrell, 17th, 13:07.38; Sycamore’s Davyd Parker, 18th, 13:07.92; and Battle Creek’s Alejandro Castillo, 21st, 13:12.51.

Luke Garland was the next WCA runner to finish after Karl as he placed 74th for the meet with a time of 14:51.21.

Nolan Curtis also cracked the top 100 for WCA in 86th place with a mark of 15:13.93.

Rounding out the performances for the WCA Lions were Miles Felton in 105th and Nathan Jaccard in 160th with respective times of 15:49.59 and 18:43.67.

The first member of the South Trojans to finish the course in the boys race was AJ Long in 80th with a time of 15:06.96.

Ethan Short recorded a 124th-place finish for the Trojans with a mark of 16:45.21.

The remaining runners for the Trojans and their times and placements for the day were Romeo Swartout, 146th, 17:47.99; Riley Lesko, 168th, 19:39.96; and Max Leffler-Mitchell, 179th, 24:52.58.

The Lions finished 15th out of 25 boys team at the meet with a total score of 421 while the Trojans finished 22nd in the team rankings with a score of 610.

The team qualifiers on the boys side and their scores for the day were Central Magnet, 106; Fairview, 111; John T. Moore Middle, 168; Cumberland County, 171; Merrol Hyde, 185; Tullahoma, 193; Burns, 209; and Martin Luther King Junior School, 241.

South and WCA fielded four runners each in the girls portion of the meet with South’s Payton Dearing turning in the best local performance among them. She finished 74th out of 148 runners with a time of 17:36.89.

The individual qualifiers for the girls race and their time and placements for the day included Sycamore’s Casey Steel, first, 13:52.13; Loretto’s Brooklyn Helton, 18th, 14:49.34; Sycamore’s Kya Harvey, 20th, 14:59.03; Hillsboro’s Amelia Porritt, 25th, 15:19.58; Burns’ Leah Harvey, 27th, 15:26.06; Hickman County’s Rachel Puckett, 28th, 15:27.41; John T. Moore’s Sydney Okolichany, 30th, 15:33.35; Finley Long, 31st, 15:34.09; John T. Moore’s Karin Engh, 37th, 16:11.87; and Richland’s Layla Hopwood, 38th, 16:41.21.

South’s Adyson Kaluzny finished 106th for the day with a time of 20:37.01.

The remaining runners for the Lady Trojans and their times and placements for the day were Emmelia Leffler-Mitchell, 138th, 25:18.94; and Chloe Tiner, 141st, 27:39.97.

The first Lady Lion to cross the finish line was Annie Wells in 87th place with a mark of 18:40.9.

Elise Horton finished 109th for the girls race with a time of 20:50.9.

Audrey Glenn took 125th place with a mark of 23:03.91, and Maddie Wiley placed 131st with a time of 23:55.66 to round out the performances for the Lady Lions.

The Lady Trojans and Lady Lions didn’t field enough runners to qualify for the team standings.
