Leathers recognized for exemplary sportsmanship

St. Andrew’s-Sewanee volleyball player Emilie Leathers was recently recognized by the National Federation of State High School Associations and the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association for acts of good sportsmanship.

Leathers, a junior, was named a recipient of the NFHS Student-Athlete Award of Excellence, which is presented by the TSSAA and the NFHS to recognize high school athletes who demonstrate exceptional sportsmanship and integrity both in their sport and outside of it, according to a press release from the TSSAA.

During a match on Aug. 24 between St. Andrew’s-Sewanee and Berean Academy, Leathers spoke up in two separate instances to correct a missed call from a line judge which would have benefited her team.

Leathers informed the officials of the mistakes, resulting in points rightfully being awarded to Berean Academy in both instances during a competitive match where three of the five sets were decided by two points.

The Lady Mountain Lions of Sewanee ultimately emerged as the victors in five sets, taking the fifth and final frame by a score of 18-16, but Leathers’ efforts to keep the game fair stood out regardless of the final result, according to the press release.

SAS Athletic Director Rob Zeitler, who is also the head volleyball coach at Sewanee, later talked to the student body about what Leathers did, promoting the important of honesty, integrity and sportsmanship in all aspects of life, the press release said.
