Middle school Lady Hornets outpace Blanche in season opener

The Huntland Middle School Lady Hornets beat the Blanche Lady Bulldogs 35-17 at home Thursday in their first game of the season.

The Lady Hornets outscored their opponent in each quarter and fully pulled away in the final period to secure a victory to start the year.

The lead changed hands a few times in the opening period before the Lady Hornets established control of the scoreboard.

They led 10-7 after one quarter.

The Lady Hornets allowed just one shot to be made in the second quarter as they added a few more points to their advantage.

They led 15-9 at halftime.

The teams traded a few baskets throughout the third quarter with the Lady Hornets carrying a 23-15 lead into the final period.

The Lady Hornets scored the last 11 points of the contest to push the deficit up to double digits late as they went on to win by 18 points.

Catara Johnson led the Lady Hornets with 16 points for the game, followed by Abbey Mason with 10 points and Millie Walker and Loralie Mason with four points each.

Josie Lafevers scored one point.

With the win, the Lady Hornets started the season with a record of 1-0.

They will next play Monday at Community Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
