Middle school Hornets trounce Moore County in road contest

The Huntland Middle School Hornets beat the Moore County Raiders 45-22 on the road Tuesday for their fourth win of the season.

The Hornets opened up a big lead to close out the first half and never looked back for a blowout victory in the rivalry contest.

The Hornets scored the first seven points of the game to give themselves a decent early edge.

They led 11-5 after one quarter.

The Hornets ended the first half on a high note as a run of nine straight points to conclude the second quarter gave them a double-digit advantage.

They led 25-9 at halftime.

The Raiders began to do more scoring in the third quarter, but the Hornets still maintained a decent lead throughout the period. Bryant Mooney scored six of Huntland’s 10 points in the third quarter.

Huntland led 35-18 going into the final period.

The Hornets brought the deficit up to more than 20 points early in the fourth quarter and kept it there for the rest of the day as they won by 23. Davis Keith scored six of Huntland’s 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Mooney led the Hornets with 18 points for the game, followed by Micah Tipps with nine points and Keith with eight.

Adon Bass scored seven points and Evan Goode scored three.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 4-3 on the season.

They will next play Thursday at Fayetteville Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
