Sewanee swimmers take part in regional event

Members of the St. Andrew’s-Sewanee swim team competed in the Middle Tennessee High School Swimming Association’s regional meet Friday at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville.

Six total SAS athletes swam in the meet across eight events with senior Sarah Russell Leonard recording two top-25 finishes for the day.

Leonard medaled in the girls 200-yard individual medley as she finished 15th out of 48 swimmers with a time of 2:17.66, improving on her seed time by 4.48 seconds. Brentwood Academy’s Faith Gorey finished first in the event with a mark of 2:00.82.

Leonard returned to the pool for the girls 100-yard backstroke and finished 25th out of 62 competitors with a time of 1:04.37. Ravenwood’s Allie Joyce placed first with a time of 55.67 seconds.

SAS had representatives in two relay events for the day as Leonard, Ruthie Sweeney, Myrtle Jane Shealy and Leah Moody finished 26th out of 28 teams in the girls 200-yard medley relay with a mark of 2:21.67. Ravenwood took first place for the event with a time of 1:45.24.

The relay team of Sweeney, Moody, Leonard and Melissa Haworth finished 29th out of 31 entries in the girls 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:04.5 while Brentwood Academy placed first with a mark of 1:36.14.

Archer Ladd was the lone boys representative for SAS at the meet as he finished 48th out of 74 swimmers in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.68. Ensworth’s Quincy Topping finished first with a time of 54.95 seconds.

Sweeney competed in two individual events as she placed 69th out of 76 swimmers in the girls 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:32.69. Ravenwood’s Sarah Carrico finished the event in 1:54.34 to take first place.

Sweeney also finished 79th out of 85 swimmers in the girls 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:07.45, and Father Ryan’s Emilia Trailov placed first with a mark of 51.84 seconds.

Moody rounded out the individual performances for SAS as she finished 86th out of 109 swimmers in the girls 50-yard freestyle with a time of 29.44 seconds.

Middle Tennessee Home Education’s Maryellen Lewis finished first in the event with a mark of 23.69 seconds.

Leonard will represent SAS in the Tennessee Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association’s state meet on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7 at the Centennial Sportsplex. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on both days.
