Huffhines, Leonard swim in state meet

The Tennessee Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association’s state championship meet was held Friday and Saturday at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville with two local swimmers competing in the event.
Carson Huffhines, representing the Franklin County Christian Homeschool team, and Sarah Russell Leonard, swimming for St. Andrew’s-Sewanee, participated in two events each with Huffhines medaling in the boys 100-yard butterfly Friday.
Each event at the meet was split into two parts with a preliminary round held earlier in the meet and a final round consisting of the top 16 swimmers from each preliminary event.
Huffhines finished 16th out of 50 swimmers in the preliminary portion of the butterfly with a time of 52.99 seconds, putting him 0.1 seconds ahead of Montgomery Bell’s Rhett Wilbert and Mt. Juliet’s Tobin Carpenter for the last qualifying berth.
Huffhines also finished 16th in the finals of the butterfly event with a mark of 53.31 seconds. Baylor’s Hayden Vicknair finished first overall with a time of 46.91 seconds.
Huffhines returned to the pool on Saturday for the 100-yard freestyle and finished 27th out of 46 swimmers with a time of 49.08 seconds. Baylor’s Ethan Gover finished first for the event with a final time of 44.83 seconds.
Leonard competed in the girls 100-yard butterfly Friday and finished 31st out of 63 swimmers with a mark of 1:01.89. Maryville’s Ellie Stanley took first place for the day with a time of 53.84 seconds.
Leonard also competed in the 500-yard freestyle Saturday and took 32nd place out of 61 swimmers with a time of 5:33.31. Father Ryan’s Libby Helmer completed the event in 4:56.7 to finish first for the day.
The TISCA state meet marked the end of the high school swimming season.
