Lady Hornets fall to Richland in district play

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Richland Lady Raiders 9-6 at home Tuesday for their sixth loss of the season.
The Lady Hornets faced a steady deficit for most of the game as the Lady Raiders gave them their first district loss of the year.
The Lady Raiders jumped out to an early lead after scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.
The Lady Hornets made up some ground in the bottom of the first as Emily Stewart scored off of an error following a single from Kinah Mason and Lily Jackson hit an RBI double to make it a 3-2 game.
However, the Lady Raiders got one of those runs back in the top of the second to put the overall score at 4-2.
An RBI groundout from Millie Walker in the bottom of the fourth allowed the Lady Hornets to cut into the deficit again before the Lady Raiders scored another run in the top of the fifth to grow the deficit back up to 5-3.
The Lady Raiders went on to score four more runs in the top of the sixth to put the Lady Hornets in a 9-3 hole late.
The Lady Hornets then cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth as Walker recorded an RBI double and Lynsey Jakubowski and Walker scored off of an error on a ball hit by Stewart to make it a 9-6 game.
However, the Lady Hornets were held off the board in the bottom of the seventh as they lost by three.
Mason pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with five strikeouts, 11 hits, one walk, five earned runs and four unearned runs allowed.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 2-6 on the season and 1-1 in district play.
They will next play Thursday at Fayetteville City High School. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
