FC boys shut out Columbia in district quarterfinals

The Franklin County High School boys soccer team beat the Columbia Lions 1-0 at home Saturday in a quarterfinal game for the District 9AAA tournament.

The lone goal of the contest was scored early in the first half with Franklin County shutting out the Lions from there to advance to the next round of the bracket.

Franklin County head soccer coach Kent Bean said that his team played well overall in the contest, and he was glad to get the win and keep the season alive.

“We’ve been having some ups and downs this year, but I think that was a good one to get under our belts going into the rest of this tournament,” he said. “We had some opportunities we left out there, but I think we limited their opportunities, which was really good on the defense’s part, and Troy (McEwan) had a good game back there in the goal.”

Franklin County took the lead with 31:19 remaining in the first half as Nic Vega received a pass down the field from Henry Gomez and fired a shot into the net to make it a 1-0 game. It was the second goal of the season for Vega.

Franklin County led 1-0 at halftime.

Franklin County wasn’t able to break through for another goal in the second half, but the Lions were also held off the board on their scattered offensive opportunities throughout the period as McEwan and the Franklin County defense recorded the team’s third shutout of the season.

With the win, Franklin County improved to 10-7-1 on the season.

Franklin County 5, Knowledge 2 Warren County 3, Franklin County 2 The FCHS boys soccer team beat the Knowledge Academies Tigers 5-2 on the road Friday for the team’s ninth win of the season.

Franklin County scored four goals in the second half to pull away from the Tigers and end the regular season on a decisive win.

Franklin County recorded the first goal of the day about 12 minutes into the contest as Ian Tyson scored off of an assist from Isacc Gomez.

The Tigers were assessed a red card midway through the first half which left them in an 11-on-10 situation on the field for the rest of the game, but they still recorded an equalizer a few minutes later to make it a 1-1 game.

The game was tied at 1-1 at halftime.

Franklin County retook the lead about four minutes into the second half as Bryan Perez fielded a deflected shot and fired it back into the net to give his team a 2-1 edge.

Isacc Gomez added to the lead a few minutes later as he scored off of an assist from Nathaniel Dickson to put the overall tally at 3-1.

The Tigers answered back once more with about 10 minutes remaining as they scored to cut the deficit down to 3-2.

However, Franklin County scored two more goals late to pull away for good as Isacc Gomez scored after receiving a corner kick from Leevi Jones, and Tyson scored off of an assist from Bryan Perez for his second goal of the day and his fifth of the season.

The Tigers weren’t able to respond again in the time remaining as Franklin County won by three.

With the win, Franklin County improved to 9-7-1 on the season.

The FCHS boys soccer team lost to the Warren County Pioneers 3-2 on the road on April 29 for the team’s seventh loss of the season.

Franklin County fell behind by a decent amount early in the district contest with a late rally coming up short by a single goal.

The Pioneers pulled ahead about 10 minutes into the contest as they scored off of a free kick to make it a 1-0 game.

The Pioneers scored again midway through the first half to double the early deficit against Franklin County.

Franklin County trailed 2-0 at halftime.

Franklin County got off to a slow start in the second half with the Pioneers capitalizing by scoring early in the period to boost their lead up to 3-0.

Franklin County got on the board midway through the second half as a shot from Vega was deflected by Warren County’s goalkeeper into the feet of Gezer Hernandez with Hernandez scoring on a follow-up shot to make it a 3-1 game. It was the seventh goal of the season for Hernandez.

Franklin County was awarded a penalty kick later in the second half, and Giovanni Mendez successfully converted the attempt into a goal to cut the deficit down to 3-2. It was the eighth goal of the season for Giovanni Mendez.

However, the Pioneers were able to prevent Franklin County from scoring again in the time remaining as Franklin County lost by one.

With the loss, Franklin County moved to 8-7-1 on the season and 5-3-1 in district play.
