Lions Club to host turkey shoots this weekend in Estill Springs

It is that time again for the Estill Springs Lions Club’s annual turkey shoots.

This will be the 13th year for the shoots. A shoot was held on Nov. 4-5 and another will be held this coming Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. at the farm located at 308 Rock Creek Road in Estill Springs, just off Highway 41A.

For those who are new to a turkey shoot, contrary to what some may believe, turkeys are not just turned loose for hunters to try to hunt them. In fact, it happens to be much easier to be a turkey winner.

Estill Springs Lions Club President Ray Davis explains how it works.

“A line of 15 targets are put up with shooters being 26 yards away from the targets,” he said. “The person that hits the closest to the center of the target is the winner of the round.”

Prizes for rounds this year will include turkeys, hams, Boston butts and cash. Shots are $5 each and shells will be provided. Only standard hunting-style guns will be permitted.

“The club will honor our military veterans on Sunday with a special shoot for all military veterans,” Davis said. “Everyone is invited to come join the Estill Springs Lions Club for this fun family activity.”

The Lions Club will also have concessions available to purchase. Lions will also be collecting non-perishable food items for local church food banks.

All proceeds from the shoot will go to Lions Club community projects and St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
