Lady Hornets fall to Cascade in road opener

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Cascade Lady Champions 38-25 on the road Tuesday in their first game of the season.

The Lady Hornets trailed throughout the defensive contest with the Lady Champions pulling away in the second half to give them a loss to start their campaign.

The Lady Champions opened up an 8-2 lead to start the day with the Lady Hornets chipping the deficit back down to two points before the end of the opening period. Yareli Avalos scored four of Huntland’s six points in the first quarter.

Huntland trailed 8-6 going into the second quarter.

The Lady Champions scored the first nine points of the second quarter to pull ahead by double digits, but the Lady Hornets responded with eight straight points of their own to tighten the score again.

Huntland trailed 19-14 at halftime.

Maddie Burks hit a pair of shots to give the Lady Hornets all of their points for the third quarter as the Lady Champions boosted their advantage up to double digits once more.

Huntland trailed 29-18 going into the final period.

A 3-pointer from Bailey Morris made it an eight-point game with about five minutes left, but the Lady Champions quickly re-established a double-digit lead which remained intact for the rest of the contest as the Lady Hornets lost by 13.

Burks led the Lady Hornets with nine points for the game, followed by Morris with six points and Avalos with four.

Kinsley Kilpatrick and Riley Maxwell scored three points each.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets started their season with a record of 0-1.

They will next play Saturday at Cascade in a pair of contests. They are scheduled to play Silverdale Baptist Academy at Cascade High at 11 a.m. and Jackson County High School at Cascade Middle at 6 p.m.
