The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Cornersville Bulldogs 42-7 at home Friday for their seventh loss of the season.

The Hornets fell behind by double digits early and weren’t able to make up much ground the rest of the way as they were eliminated from postseason contention with the regional loss.

The Bulldogs opened the game with a 77-yard drive which ended in a 22-yard touchdown pass to put Huntland in a 7-0 hole with 6:14 left in the opening period.

The first drive of the day for the Hornets ended in a tipped-pass interception which gave Cornersville the ball inside Huntland’s 5-yard line, and the Bulldogs scored a rushing touchdown on the next snap to make it a 13-0 game with 4:27 left in the first quarter.

The Hornets drove deep into enemy territory on their next drive, but a fumble halted the possession and gave the ball back to Cornersville on the Bulldogs’ 21-yard line.

The Bulldogs scored two plays later on a 79-yard touchdown pass to put the deficit at 21-0 with 9:29 remaining in the first half.

The Hornets scored on the first play of their ensuing possession as quarterback Evan Keller found Jarren Kinslow open down the middle of the field for a 73-yard touchdown pass.

Grant Morris hit the point-after attempt following the touchdown as the lead was cut down to 21-7 with 9:08 to go in the half.

The teams traded punts on the next two drives before the Bulldogs drove down and scored a rushing touchdown with just five seconds left in the half to put the Hornets back behind by more than 20 points.

Huntland trailed 28-7 at halftime.

The second half started with three straight punts before the Bulldogs moved the ball into Huntland’s territory once again.

The Hornets made a stop on defense and forced a turnover on downs, but an interception a few plays later gave the ball right back to the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs converted that turnover into points as they scored a rushing touchdown in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to stretch the deficit to 35-7.

The Hornets then gave the ball right back as a fumble on the ensuing kickoff set up at the Bulldogs at Huntland’s 11-yard line.

The Bulldogs scored on the ground again on the next snap to make it a 42-7 game as the rest of the contest would be played with a running clock.

The Hornets punted the ball away on what ended up being their final possession of the day, and the Bulldogs then ran out the rest of the clock to give Huntland the loss by 35.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 2-7 on the season and 1-4 in regional play.

They will next play Thursday at Collinwood High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
