Lady Hornets take road district loss to Forrest

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Forrest Lady Rockets 3-1 on the road Monday for their second loss of the season.

The teams were deadlocked after the first half, but the Lady Rockets scored twice in the second half to pull away and give the Lady Hornets their first district loss of the year.

Huntland head soccer coach Amanda Tipps said her players had plenty of opportunities to score throughout the game, but they weren’t able to capitalize.

“We’ve got to finish at the net. We’re just not scoring,” she said. “We’ve got good scorers. We’re just not finding the net. It’s just unfortunate. We’re hitting the goalie a bunch or we’re off-target. I don’t really know what it is, but we’ll find it.”

The Lady Rockets recorded the first goal of the day as they quickly pushed the ball down the field on a free kick and fired a shot into the net from there with 23:39 remaining in the first half.

The Lady Hornets answered back with about seven minutes left in the half as Piper Cox received a pass from Hazel Reed at the top of the goal box and hit a hard shot past the opposing goalkeeper. It was the third goal of the season for Cox.

The score was tied at 1-1 at halftime.

The Lady Rockets broke up the tie with about 25 minutes remaining in the game as they broke Huntland’s defense and found the net with a shot to take a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Rockets were awarded a penalty kick with 11:15 to go, and their kicker nailed her attempt to grow the deficit to two goals late.

The Lady Hornets launched multiple attacks on the opposing goal in the time remaining, but they weren’t able to make up any ground as they lost by two.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 5-2 on the season and 5-1 in district play.

They will next play Thursday at Culleoka High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
