The Huntland Middle School Lady Hornets beat the Westwood Lady Rockets 3-0 at home Wednesday for their first win of the season.

The Lady Hornets took the lead late in the first half and built on their advantage after halftime to bring their record for the season up to an even .500.

The Lady Hornets broke the scoreless tie with about three minutes remaining in the first half as Abbey Mason hit a corner kick which arced over everybody’s head and curved inside of the far goalpost for a goal.

They led 1-0 at halftime.

Abbey Mason scored again with about eight minutes to go as she broke away from the defense and fired a shot from just outside of the goal box which hit the back of the net. It was the fourth goal of the season for Abbey Mason.

Loralie Mason added to the lead a few minutes later as she sent a shot over the opposing goalkeeper’s head and into the net for her first goal of the season with the deficit growing to 3-0 late.

The Lady Hornets were able to hold the Lady Rockets off the board for the rest of the game to clinch the victory by three.

The Lady Hornets were playing without starting goalkeeper Addyson Locke due to injury with Loralie Mason guarding the net in the first half and Kerrigan Hall taking her place after halftime as the two combined for a shutout performance.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 1-1-1 on the season.

They will next play on Sept. 8 at home against Community Middle School. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
