The Franklin County High School girls soccer team lost to the Chattanooga Christian Chargers 3-1 at home Tuesday for the team’s third loss of the season.
Franklin County got the first goal of the day, but the Chargers tied the score just before halftime and took control of the game in the second half to give Franklin County a third straight defeat.
Franklin County head soccer coach Kent Bean said his team did a good job of hanging around with a tough opponent early, but overall fatigue and the speed of the Chargers took its toll as the game went on.
“They like to kick it long to their fast player, and it just wore us down eventually. I think we did a good job of controlling what we could control there, but when you just have the ball kicked from the back line to the corners and the girl that can blow past any player you’ve got, that’s tough to deal with,” he said, adding that his team will need to work on its defensive strategies when dealing with fast opposing players.
Baylor Russell broke the scoreless tie with about 19 minutes remaining in the first half as she hit a close-range shot after receiving a pass from Gracen Baggett for her third goal of the year.
However, the lead wouldn’t last through the end of the half as the Chargers broke through for an equalizer with about six minutes left in the period.
The score was tied at 1-1 at halftime.
The Chargers scored their second goal of the day about eight minutes into the second half to put Franklin County behind by a score of 2-1.
The Chargers struck for a second goal with 17 minutes remaining off of a corner kick to bring the deficit up to 3-1 late in the contest.
On the other end of the field, Franklin County was able to get a few shots on the goal in the second half, but the Chargers kept them off the board for the period to seal a loss by two.
With the loss, Franklin County moved to 5-3 on the season.
The girls soccer team will next play Thursday at Murfreesboro Central Magnet School. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
