The Franklin County Rebelettes lost to the Shelbyville Central Golden Eaglettes 16-8 on the road Friday in an elimination game for the District 6-4A tournament.
The Rebelettes rallied from a sizable early deficit to take the lead in the fourth inning, but their advantage wouldn’t last long as the Golden Eaglettes scored the last 10 runs of the day to end their season.
The Golden Eaglettes got off to a fast start with two runs in the bottom of the first and four runs in the second to put the Rebelettes in an early 6-0 hole.
The Rebelettes got their first run of the day in the top of the third as Carissa Montgomery hit into an RBI groundout to make it a 6-1 game.
Alyssa Sherrill led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run which would ultimately spark a seven-run inning for the Rebelettes.
The Rebelettes loaded the bases later in the frame on singles by Kaitlyn Montgomery and Destin Milner and a walk drawn by Caroline Powers, and Kaitlyn Montgomery beat the throw home on a fielder’s-choice groundball hit by Natalie Hagood to give her an RBI.
Emma Owens and Carissa Montgomery followed with RBI singles to make it a one-run game before Jocilyn DeSmet came through with a two-run single to give the Rebelettes a 7-6 lead. Sherrill rounded out the scoring for the frame with an RBI groundout in her second at-bat of the inning to put the score at 8-6.
However, the Golden Eaglettes pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fourth to quickly tie the score at 8-8.
The Golden Eaglettes then retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth on consecutive two-out home runs to make it a 10-8 game late.
The Rebelettes put a runner into scoring position in the top of the sixth as Owens reached base on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on a single by Jocilyn DeSmet, but she wouldn’t advance any further as the deficit stayed at two.
The Golden Eaglettes fully pulled away with a six-run frame in the bottom of the sixth with the scoring for the inning being capped off by a grand slam to put the Rebelettes behind by eight.
The Rebelettes weren’t able to answer back in the top of the seventh as they lost by eight.
Franklin County head softball coach Kelly Kennedy said her team showed some fight after falling behind before turning her attention to the future of the team.
“We clearly have some work to do in the offseason,” she said. “I think we definitely need to work on the game overall, especially mentality and pitching. We’ve just got to get our pitchers doing a little bit more work in the offseason and see what we’ve got coming up from our middle school program.”
With the loss, the Rebelettes finished their season with a record of 4-24.
