Members of the South Middle School boys and girls track and field teams competed in the Section 3A championship meet Friday at Riverdale High School.
The top four finishers in each event received berths to the Class A state championship meet with South’s Briley Taylor and Joey Mensinga both reaching that qualifying mark in the high jump.
Taylor earned her third trip to the state meet in as many years as she finished second in the girls high jump with a top height of 4 feet, 10 inches.
Taylor and Legacy’s Emma Rees recorded the same top height, but Taylor finished behind Rees in the final rankings due to accumulating more faults during the event.
Mensinga also had a second-place finish in the boys edition of the high jump as his top height of 5 feet, 2 inches put him just behind Legacy’s Matthew Horner’s jump of 5 feet, 4 inches for the top spot.
Mensinga will be making his third appearance in the state meet in his third different event after qualifying in the 110-meter hurdles in 2021 and the 200-meter dash in 2022.
