Members of the North Middle School boys and girls track and field teams competed in the Section 3AA championship meet Saturday at Riverdale High School.

The top four finishers in each event received berths to the Class AA state championship meet with eighth-grader Sadie Hill advancing to the next round in the girls shot put and the high jump and fellow eighth-grader Gracen Baggett earning a state berth in the girls 200-meter dash.

Hill’s best performance came in the shot put as she finished first in the event with a top throw of 36 feet. She finished exactly one foot ahead of Grassland’s Molly Forrest for the event’s top spot.

Hill was also able to clinch a spot in the state meet for the high jump as she finished in a three-way tie with Siegel’s Natalie Bryson and Coffee County’s Naomi Abiose for fourth place with a top jump of 4 feet, 8 inches. The three athletes finished with identical marks for the event which meant that all three advanced to the state competition.

Hill will be competing in the state meet for the first time in both events.

Baggett raced to a fourth-place finish in the girls 200-meter dash to give the Gatorettes a qualifier in a running event. She finished the event in 27.11 seconds, beating Wright’s Syniya Wilson for the final qualifying spot by 0.84 seconds.

Baggett will run in the state meet’s 200-meter dash for the second time after previously qualifying for the event in 2021.

Other performances and placements for North athletes at the sectional meet included:

— Nevaeh Williams, girls shot put, 32 feet, 4 inches, sixth

— Austin Heath, boys long jump, 17 feet, 10 inches, seventh

— Parker Hill, boys 400-meter dash, 57.12 seconds, seventh

— Camil Edwards, Kenzie McGill, Zarae’Ya Lawrence and Audrey Stewart, girls 4×400-meter relay, 4:40.74, 11^th

— Alex Domincio, boys 800-meter run, 2:27.28, 12^th

Hill and Baggett will compete in the Class AA state championship meet on May 20 at Austin Peay State University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
