Hornets notch blowout district win versus Fayetteville

The Huntland High School Hornets beat the Fayetteville Tigers 10-1 at home Tuesday for their fifth win of the season.

The Hornets jumped out to a big early lead and cruised to a victory from there to sweep the district series versus Fayetteville.

The Hornets put up a trio of runs in the bottom of the first as Trace Morris hit a two-run double and Jed Ashley added an RBI groundout in the frame.

The Tigers scored their lone run of the day with a two-out RBI double in the top of the second to put the score at 3-1.

The Hornets loaded up the bases in the bottom of the second as Matthew Dickson walked, Eli Wiggs reached on an error and Evan Keller got hit by a pitch before Morris hit an RBI triple to score all three runners.

Morris scored on a steal of home a few pitches later to grow the early advantage to 7-1.

The next run for the Hornets came in the bottom of the fourth as Blaine Counts hit into an RBI groundout to make it a seven-run game.

The Hornets added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Keller hit an RBI single before later coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by Ashley to put the final deficit at nine.

Morris pitched the first five innings of the game with nine strikeouts, two hits and one unearned run allowed.

Kannon Lafevers closed out the final two innings in relief with six strikeouts, no hit and no runs allowed.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 5-7 on the season and 2-2 in district play.

They will next play Monday at home against Cornersville High School. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
