Hornets fall to Eagleville in road district matchup

The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Eagleville Eagles 12-0 on the road Monday for their 10th loss of the season.

The Eagles scored at least one run in every inning while the Hornets were shut out for the second time this season in the district contest.

Huntland head baseball coach Brent Davis said a large number of errors by the Hornets put them in a hole that they couldn’t work out of.

“We just looked dead in the field. We had seven or eight errors on what should have been easy, routine plays,” he said. “Against a team that’s decent, you can’t give them anything, and they’re not going to give us anything. We didn’t come ready to play today.”

The Hornets loaded the bases in the top of the first on consecutive singles by Evan Keller and Trace Morris and an error on a ball hit by Jed Ashley, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning without any of the runners crossing home plate.

The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom half of the first on a two-out RBI single and a balk to put the early deficit at 2-0.

The Eagles scored another six runs in the bottom of the second as the lengthy frame was extended by three Huntland errors in the inning.

The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the third, and the deficit grew to double digits in the bottom of the fourth as a few more errors set up a three-run inning to put the score at 12-0.

The Hornets weren’t able to manufacture any runs in the top of the fifth as the game came to an early end via the mercy rule.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 6-10 on the season and 3-4 in district play.

They will next play Tuesday at home against Eagleville High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
