FC boys soccer routs Warren County for home victory

The Franklin County High School boys soccer team beat the Warren County Pioneers 6-1 at home Tuesday for the team’s fifth win of the season.

Franklin County put up three goals in each half to steadily pull away as the team kept its overall record for the season above .500 with the district victory.

The first goal of the game came about four minutes after the opening kickoff with Kevin Hernandez scoring off an assist from Rylan Banks to quickly put the score at 1-0.

The next goal for Franklin County came with about 19 minutes remaining in the first half when Cason Eslick received a long pass from Matthew Waggoner and chipped it over the opposing goalkeeper for his first score of the season.

Hernandez struck for his second goal of the day with about nine minutes left in the first half with another long pass from Waggoner setting up the score to make it a 3-0 game.

Franklin County led 3-0 at halftime.

Josiah Cruz provided the next goal for Franklin County as he shot a corner kick into the net for his second score of the year with 24 minutes left in the contest.

Hernandez completed his hat trick about a minute later as he fired the ball into the net for his third goal of the day and his eighth of the season to grow the deficit to 5-0.

Franklin County secured the lead further with about five minutes to go as Banks scored from close range for his sixth goal of the campaign to expand the advantage to 6-0.

The Pioneers were awarded a penalty kick in the final seconds of the contest, and they scored on the attempt to avoid the shutout as Franklin County won by five.

With the win, Franklin County improved to 5-3 on the season and 2-1 in district play.

The boys soccer team will next play Thursday at Shelbyville Central High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
