Late 3-pointer ends undefeated run

The Huntland Middle School Hornets lost to the South Lincoln Eagles 54-52 on the road Thursday for their first loss of the season.

The back-and-forth contest came down to the wire as a 3-pointer from the Eagles in the closing seconds swung the game against the Hornets and ended their 15-game winning streak to start the season.

Both offenses got off to fast starts with the Eagles holding an early advantage in the contest.

Huntland trailed 20-15 after one quarter.

The Hornets allowed just four points in the second quarter as they were able to pull ahead of their opposition before the end of the half.

They led 25-24 at halftime.

The Hornets added a few more points to their advantage in the third quarter, but the Eagles continued to keep the game relatively close.

Huntland led 40-35 going into the final period.

The Hornets found themselves holding onto a slight 52-51 advantage in the final minute, but the Eagles hit a go-ahead 3-pointer at the last second to give Huntland the loss by two. Julius Miller scored seven of Huntland’s 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Micah Tipps led the Hornets with 12 points for the game, followed by Miller and Luke Yarbrough with 11 points each.

Ellis Stewart scored 10 points and Bryant Mooney scored eight.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 15-1 on the season.

They will next play Monday at Unity Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
