Middle school Hornets hold off Unity for road victory

The Huntland Middle School Hornets beat the Unity Lions 52-46 on the road Monday for their 16th win of the season.

After a close first three quarters, the Hornets closed out the game with their best offensive period to pick up the victory.

The Hornets jumped out to an early lead as they were able to outpace the hosting Lions by a few possessions in the opening period.

They led 12-7 after one quarter.

The Lions answered back in the second quarter as they chipped away a majority of Huntland’s advantage before halftime.

The Hornets led 22-21 at the end of the first half.

The score remained close throughout the third quarter with the Lions securing a slight advantage going into the final period. Ellis Stewart scored six of Huntland’s eight points in the third quarter.

Huntland trailed 32-30 after three quarters.

The Hornets flipped the scoreboard back in their favor in the fourth quarter as they put up 22 total points in the period to pull back ahead and clinch the win by six.

Stewart led the Hornets with 21 points for the game, followed by Micah Tipps and Luke Yarbrough with 10 points each.

Brooklyn Reynolds scored five points, Julius Miller scored four and Bryant Mooney scored two.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 16-1 on the season.

They will next play Wednesday at Fayetteville Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
