Lady Hornets top Cornersville for home district win

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs 54-40 at home Friday for their 13th win of the season.
The Lady Hornets opened up a double-digit lead in the second quarter and maintained it for the rest of the day to get a win in their first district contest of the campaign.
The Lady Bulldogs scored the first six points of the contest, but the Lady Hornets answered back with 10 straight points of their own.
Huntland led 10-6 after one quarter.
The Lady Hornets ended the second quarter on a 10-2 run to give themselves a sizable lead going into halftime. Logan McLennan scored 13 of Huntland’s 17 points in the second quarter.
They led 27-14 at the end of the first half.
The Lady Hornets kept the deficit steady throughout the third quarter as they added a few more points to their lead.
They led 44-28 going into the final period.
The Lady Bulldogs briefly cut the lead down to nine points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Lady Hornets didn’t let them get any closer as they went on to win by 14.
McLennan led the Lady Hornets with 24 points for the game, followed by Jocy May and Aysia Williams with 11 points each.
Kinsley Kilpatrick scored five points, Marley Phillips scored two and Yareli Avalos scored one.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 13-7 on the season and 1-0 in district play.
They will next play Saturday at home against Grundy County High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
