Huntland Middle girls fall to Highland Rim in overtime

The Huntland Middle School Lady Hornets lost to the Highland Rim Lady Hornets 34-32 in overtime at home Thursday for their eighth loss of the season.
The Huntland Lady Hornets weren’t able to hold onto a late lead in regulation and came up short in an extra period as they lost their fourth straight game.
Highland Rim scored the last seven points of the opening period to jump out to an early lead.
Huntland trailed 9-4 after one quarter.
Huntland tied the score at 11-11 with about two minutes left in the first half on a 3-pointer from Stratton Davis.
Highland Rim pulled back ahead later in the second quarter, but Huntland’s Abigail Denton hit a layup with 10 seconds left to tie the game at 13-13 going into halftime.
The score remained tight throughout the third quarter with Davis hitting another 3-pointer with 52 seconds left in the period to give Huntland a 25-22 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Highland Rim was able to tie the score at 26-26 early in the fourth quarter, but Huntland retook the lead and held a 30-26 advantage with two minutes remaining.
However, that would not be enough of a cushion as Highland Rim tied the score up once more with about 30 seconds left in regulation. After a Huntland turnover, Highland Rim got the ball back but was not able to hit a shot as time expired.
The score was tied at 30-30 after four quarters.
Highland Rim took an early lead in the three-minute overtime period, and the Huntland Lady Hornets scored just two points in the period on a basket by Davis as they lost by two.
Davis led Huntland with 13 points for the game, followed by Denton and Lynsey Jakubowski with six points each.
Millie Walker scored five points and Emily Stewart scored two.
With the loss, the Huntland Lady Hornets moved to 11-8 on the season.
They will next play Monday at home against Unity Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
