Hornets pick up home district win versus Moore County

The Huntland High School Hornets beat the Moore County Raiders 63-51 at home Friday for their 14th win of the season.

The Hornets took the lead early in the second quarter and held it for the rest of the game as they picked up their third straight district victory.

The Raiders pulled ahead early in the contest with the Hornets lurking a few points behind throughout the opening period.

Huntland trailed 16-13 after one quarter.

The Hornets opened the second quarter with a 15-4 run to flip the scoreboard in their favor as they took a small lead into the halftime break.

They led 30-26 at the end of the first half.

The Hornets scored 12 straight points to start the third quarter as they brought their lead up to double digits for the first time in the game.

They led 44-34 going into the final period.

Huntland’s lead peaked at 20 points midway through the fourth quarter with the Hornets ultimately settling for a 12-point victory.

Eli Wiggs and Braylen Phillips led the Hornets with 16 points each for the game, followed by Lashawn Kimmons and Kannon Lafevers with 13 points each.

Trace Kilpatrick scored five points.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 14-10 on the season and 5-1 in district play.

They will next play Tuesday at Cascade High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
