The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Moore County Raiderettes 38-37 at home Friday for their 10th loss of the season.

The Raiderettes scored the last nine points of the first quarter to take the lead in the early moments of the contest. Yareli Avalos scored four of Huntland’s six points in the opening period.

The Lady Hornets trimmed the deficit down to two points early in the second quarter, but they wouldn’t be able to pull any closer.

They trailed 17-10 at halftime.

The Lady Hornets scored the first six points of the third quarter to make it a one-point game, but the Raiderettes proceeded to end the period on a 10-2 run to push the deficit to its highest point. Avalos scored six of Huntland’s eight points in the third quarter.

Huntland trailed 27-18 going into the final period.

After a turnover by the Raiderettes, the Lady Hornets ran the clock down before Logan McLennan drove in and hit a short jumper to give the Lady Hornets a two-point lead with about two seconds remaining.

The clock then hit zero and the Lady Hornets began to celebrate the apparent  win, but it was determined that Moore County called a timeout with 1.5 seconds on the clock.

Following the timeout, the Raiderettes threw a long inbounds pass to Ellie Graham who drew a shooting foul from beyond the 3-point arc as time expired. Graham proceeded to hit all three of her free throws to give the Lady Hornets the loss by one.
