Hornets rout Cornersville for road district win

The Huntland High School Hornets beat the Cornersville Bulldogs 98-60 on the road Tuesday for their 13th win of the season.
The Hornets jumped out to an early lead and dominated the second half for a blowout victory in the district contest.
The Hornets scored the first seven points of the game to establish a decent early lead over their opposition.
They led 15-11 after one quarter.
The Bulldogs briefly tied the score at 22-22 early in the second quarter, but the Hornets responded with an 11-2 run to pull back ahead through the end of the half.
Huntland led 34-30 at halftime.
The Hornets opened the second half with a lengthy 17-3 run as part of a 30-point third quarter which brought their lead up to double digits for the rest of the day.
They led 64-48 going into the final period.
An 18-2 run by the Hornets to begin the fourth quarter ended any chance of a Cornersville comeback, and the Hornets fell just two points shy of reaching a triple-digit point total as they won by 38 points.
Lashawn Kimmons led the Hornets with 24 points for the game, followed by Braylen Phillips with 22 points and Eli Wiggs with 19.
Trace Kilpatrick scored 15 points, Kannon Lafevers scored nine, Demetri Reed scored five, and Jarren Kinslow and Avery Petty scored two points each.
With the win, the Hornets improved to 13-10 on the season and 4-1 in district play.
They will next play Friday at home against Moore County High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
