Lady Hornets pick up district victory at Fayetteville

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Fayetteville Lady Tigers 54-46 on the road Tuesday for their 16th win of the season.
After a close first half, the Lady Hornets pulled away in the third quarter and held off a rally attempt early in the fourth quarter to secure the district victory.
A back-and-forth opening period ended with the Lady Tigers on top by the slightest of margins after hitting a free throw with 0.7 seconds left in the quarter. Yareli Avalos scored six of Huntland’s 10 points in the first quarter.
Huntland trailed 11-10 after one quarter.
The teams traded the lead a few times in the second quarter with the Lady Hornets ending up ahead on the scoreboard when the first half came to an end. Jocy May scored eight of Huntland’s 14 points in the second quarter.
They led 24-21 at halftime.
The momentum continued to swing back and forth early in the third quarter as a 27-21 lead for the Lady Hornets quickly turned into a 27-27 tie after a pair of 3-pointers from the Lady Tigers.
However, the Lady Hornets took control from there as they went on a 15-5 run for the rest of the period to build a double-digit advantage.
They led 42-32 going into the final period.
The Lady Tigers came within four points of the lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Hornets didn’t let them get any closer as they held on to win by eight. May scored seven of Huntland’s 12 points in the fourth quarter.
May led the Lady Hornets with 21 points for the game, followed by Logan McLennan with 13 points and Avalos with 12.
Kinsley Kilpatrick scored four points, Aysia Williams scored three and Morgan Sanders scored one.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 16-8 on the season and 3-0 in district play.
They will next play Friday at Eagleville High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
