The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Fayetteville Tigers 64-51 on the road Tuesday for their 10th loss of the season.

The middle quarters would prove to be the biggest difference in the game as major scoring runs by the Tigers to close out the second and third period created most of the final deficit for Huntland in the district defeat.

The score was kept close throughout the opening period with a 3-pointer from Kannon Lafevers giving the Hornets the lead with about a minute left in the quarter.

They led 10-9 after one quarter.

The Hornets opened up a five-point lead early in the second quarter before the Tigers ended the first half on a 14-2 run to flip the scoreboard. Braylen Phillips scored seven of Huntland’s nine points in the second quarter.

Huntland trailed 26-19 at halftime

The Hornets cut the deficit down to four points multiple times in the third quarter before a 10-2 run by the Tigers to close out the period brought the deficit up to double digits for the first time. Phillips scored all 14 points for the Hornets in the third quarter.

Huntland trailed 45-33 going into the final period.

The deficit remained steady for the rest of the day as the Hornets weren’t able to make up any substantial ground and lost by 13 points.

Phillips led the Hornets with 36 points for the game, followed by Lashawn Kimmons with seven points and Lafevers with five. Phillips hit five 3-pointers in the contest.

Cade Limbaugh scored three points.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 11-10 on the season and 2-1 in district play.

They will next play Friday at Eagleville High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
