Lady Hornets win two, lose one for week

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Richland Lady Raiders 13-3 on the road on April 23 for their seventh loss of the season.
A seven-run fourth inning from Richland provided most of the final scoring differential with the Lady Raiders putting the game out of reach in the sixth inning to end Huntland’s six-game winning streak.
The Lady Raiders scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the second to put the Lady Hornets behind by a 3-0 margin early.
The Lady Hornets got on the board in the top of the fourth as Lily Jackson came through with a twoout, two-run home run to cut the deficit down to 3-2.
However, the Lady Raiders took advantage of multiple Huntland errors in the bottom of the fourth to score seven runs in the frame and make it a 10-2 game.
The Lady Hornets scored their last run of the contest in the top of the sixth as Catara Johnson drew a leadoff walk, moved up to second on a single from Emily Stewart, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored off of an RBI groundout from Jackson to put the overall tally at 10-3.
The Lady Raiders scored three more runs in the bottom half of the sixth to trigger the mercy rule as the Lady Hornets lost by 10.
Kinah Mason pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with five strikeouts, nine hits, three walks, four earned runs and nine unearned runs allowed for the day.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 8-7 on the season and 5-2 in district play.
Lady Hornets 12, Grundy County 2
The Lady Hornets beat the Grundy County Lady Jackets 12-2 at home on April 21 for their eighth win of the season.
The Lady Hornets scored multiple runs in three of their four innings at the plate as they steadily pulled away for a blowout victory and secured their sixth straight win.
The Lady Jackets were the first team on the board as they scored a run off of a sacrifice fly in the top of the first.
However, the Lady Hornets answered back with four runs in the bottom of the first as a two-run double from Stewart, an RBI double from Mason and an RBI single from Jackson gave them an early 4-1 advantage.
The Lady Hornets tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third as an RBI single from Mason and a two-run home run from Lily Jackson pushed their lead up to 7-1.
The Lady Hornets pulled ahead by double digits in the bottom of the fourth as Mason hit a two-run double; Jackson contributed an RBI single; Aliza Hill, pinch-running for Mason, scored off of an error; and Peyton Counts recorded an RBI single to make it a 12-1 game.
The Lady Jackets scored a run off of an error in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Hornets recorded the last out they needed from there to trigger the mercy rule and win by 10.
Mason pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with seven strikeouts, four hits, one earned run and one unearned run allowed for the day.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 8-6 on the season.
Lady Hornets 11, Fayetteville 6
The Lady Hornets beat the Fayetteville Lady Tigers 11-6 at home on April 20 for their seventh win of the season.
The Lady Hornets built up a big lead in the middle innings of the contest as they held on from there for a decisive district victory.
The Lady Tigers took the lead in the top of the first as they scored a pair of runs in the frame.
However, the Lady Hornets flipped the scoreboard with a six-run frame in the bottom of the first as Johnson hit into an RBI groundout, Jackson recorded an RBI double, Natalynn Bolin contributed an RBI single, and Lynsey Jakubowski cleared the bases with a three-run double to make it a 6-2 game.
An RBI groundout from Millie Walker and an RBI double from Johnson in the bottom of the third further expanded Huntland’s early lead to 8-2.
The Lady Hornets struck for two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run from Jackson, and a sacrifice fly from Stewart in the bottom of the fifth pushed the deficit up to 11-2.
The Lady Tigers scored a run in the top of the sixth and recorded three more runs in the top of the seventh to make up some ground, but the Lady Hornets shut them down from there to seal the five-run victory.
Mason pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with 13 strikeouts, eight hits, one walk and six unearned runs allowed for the day.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 7-6 on the season and 5-1 in district play.
They next played Tuesday at home against South Pittsburg High School in a game which came after the Herald Chronicle’s press deadline.
