Middle school Lady Hornets drop road contest to Fayetteville

The Huntland Middle School Lady Hornets lost to the Fayetteville Lady Tigers 40-25 on the road Wednesday for their seventh loss of the season.

The Lady Hornets fell behind by double digits late in the first half and weren’t able to make up any ground after halftime as they took their third straight defeat.

The Lady Hornets led for most of the opening period, but the Lady Tigers hit a layup at the buzzer to tie the score at 8-8 as the first quarter came to an end.

The Lady Tigers scored nine straight points to end the second quarter as they brought the early deficit up to double digits.

Huntland trailed 23-11 at halftime.

The deficit continued to grow in the third quarter as the Lady Hornets were not able to keep up with Fayetteville’s scoring pace. Stratton Davis scored all eight of Huntland’s points in the third quarter.

Huntland trailed 37-19 going into the final period.

The Lady Hornets only allowed three points in the fourth quarter, but they weren’t able to make much of a dent in the deficit before losing by 15.

Davis led the Lady Hornets with 13 points for the game, followed by Abigail Denton and Millie Walker with five points each.

Lynsey Jakubowski scored two points.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 11-7 on the season.

They will next play Thursday at home against Highland Rim Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
