Hornets pull away late for district win at Eagleville

The Huntland High School Hornets beat the Eagleville Eagles 67-49 on the road Friday for their 12th win of the season.

The Hornets opened up a big lead in the first half and pulled away for good in the fourth quarter as they kept their overall and district records for the season above .500 with the victory.

The Hornets ended the opening period on a 14-4 run to create an early double-digit advantage. Braylen Phillips scored 10 of Huntland’s 20 points in the first quarter.

They led 20-9 after one quarter.

The Eagles made it a five-point game midway through the second quarter before the Hornets scored 11 straight points to end the half with a sizable advantage.

Huntland led 37-21 at halftime.

The Eagles chipped away a large portion of the lead in the third quarter with the Hornets continuing to hold on to a decent advantage through the end of the period. Lashawn Kimmons scored six of Huntland’s 11 points in the third quarter.

Huntland led 48-39 going into the final period.

The Hornets closed out the contest with a 13-5 run to end any chance of an Eagleville comeback as they easily finished off the 18-point win.

Kimmons led the Hornets with 22 points for the game, followed by Phillips with 18 points and Trace Kilpatrick with 15.

Kannon Lafevers scored 12 points.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 12-10 on the season and 3-1 in district play.

They will next play Tuesday at Cornersville High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
